A collaborative project with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery

The SHS in Dunedin completed a collaborative project with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery (DPAG) recently, which was a culmination of many months’ work.

Seven students and two SHS staff worked with Jen Boland, the curator, to find art pieces that “connected” us.

The journey began with establishing types of art we liked before narrowing down to several examples. This was then reduced to just a few which were then made available for viewing in the DPAG collection in the basement! This was a real treat having access to such valuable art works, not normally seen by the public.

Once 1-2 art pieces were chosen, it was time to write the accompanying label for the exhibition. This required much thought and reflection, as well as working through nerves about placing our name against our chosen art piece.

Collaboration was really key to this project, from the selection of art pieces, to guidance with label writing, right through to the arrangement of the pieces themselves. What emerged was ‘CONNECT(ED)’ which opened to the public on 28 June, with a special opening ceremony beforehand. The CONNECT(ED)  exhibition is on display at the DPAG (The Octagon, Dunedin Central) until late November. Check it out!

The SHS are very proud of the past and present students who participated, namely Auleen, Zara, Claudia, Quinn, Milo, Lachie and Ada. Special thanks to Megan Garrett, our SHS Teacher Aide, who provided much support behind the scenes, as well as participating in CONNECT(ED). A very big thank you to Jen Boland at the DPAG. Jen’s fabulous idea, combined with her enthusiasm, kindness and patience were so appreciated. The SHS feels very connected to the DPAG and we thank them for this incredible opportunity.
