Principal’s Message

Te Kura Whaiora ki te Tonga/The Southern Health School is dedicated to supporting ākonga on their journey to health by providing personalised education, fostering confidence, and enabling successful transitions back into the wider world alongside their whānau, health teams, and schools.

Kia ora, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Kia orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Mālo ni, Ni sa bula vinaka, Noa’ia, Fakatalofa, Kam na mauri and warm Pasifika greetings to you all!

It is my privilege to be the Tumuaki/Principal of the Southern Health School and to welcome you to our school.

Te Kura Waiora ki te Tonga/The Southern Health School was set up to support children and young people who are unable to attend school due to ill health. We have a team of exceptional kaiako/teachers and kaimahi/workers who support ākonga/learners to continue their education while they navigate their health journey. These kaiako operate across a wide range of sites and locations throughout Te Waipounamu/The South Island. Where there is a need for our services, we will do all we can to meet it.

Our work is about more than just supporting ākonga/learners to keep up with school work. It is also about building the confidence, capability and dispositions all young people need to engage effectively with learning and to move out into the world with increasing independence. We look at the whole person in front of us, working with them, their whānau, their health team, and their school of origin to design a programme of learning that is personalised and responsive to the health and educational needs of the ākonga/learner.

We walk alongside our ākonga/learners as they build up the ‘match fitness’ they need to take the next steps in their education and we support them to transition successfully to these next steps.

We are incredibly proud of the work we do and the success we achieve in supporting young people and their families during what is inevitably a time of significant stress. If you would like to know more about what we do and whether we may be able to help someone in your whānau, please contact us via phone or email.
