Kellie in Timaru has been working towards ensuring students receive learning opportunities across a range of cultural contexts.
She aims for activities that students will relate to, or will enjoy. By using the Ministry provided School Journals, and Connected series of books, she is able to provide learning for students across Curriculum Levels 2-4, designed specifically around the bicultural (and multicultural) context of New Zealand.
School Journals provide a range of text types including poems, stories, plays and articles. The older Connected books provide Science based texts, with the newer Connected Books being based around the New Zealand History curriculum.
Kellie also uses opportunities to embrace students’ individual knowledge, putting them in the role of an expert or leader. They are the tuakana and she is the teina.
