About Us
Southern Health School/Te Kura Whaiora ki te Tonga is a state special school providing education for ākonga in Years 1–13 who are unable to attend their regular school due to health needs. We work alongside whānau, schools, and health professionals to ensure learning continues during illness and to support successful transitions back to full-time education.
About the Role
We are seeking a Teaching Aide/Kaiawhina to work alongside teachers in our Timaru classroom space, supporting ākonga through individual and small-group learning programmes. This role contributes to maintaining learning continuity, supporting wellbeing, and helping students remain engaged during periods of illness and recovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Support individual ākonga and small groups with learning activities
- Assist teachers with the delivery of planned lessons
- Adapt learning resources to meet individual learning needs
- Support student wellbeing, inclusion, and engagement
- Build positive, trusting relationships with ākonga
- Work collaboratively with teachers and colleagues
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
About You
You will be calm, patient, and student-centred with strong literacy, numeracy, and basic computer skills. You will communicate clearly, be reliable and organised, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Classroom or youth support experience is advantageous but not essential.
Employment Conditions
This position is covered by the Support Staff in Schools Collective Agreement (SSSCA), with grade placement based on role requirements and experience.
