Kia ora, welcome to

Te Kura Whaiora Ki Te Tonga

Southern Health School

We are a state school for ākonga (students) from Years 1 to 13 who are too ill to attend full-time education at their regular school. We teach ākonga anywhere in Te Waipounamu/South Island.

Teachers at Te Kura Whaiora ki te Tonga/The Southern Health School work with ākonga, their families and their schools, to provide an adapted programme that supports ākonga to learn during their illness and recovery. We also help ākonga to return to full-time education at their school when they are able.

School Overview

We have teachers based in the Te Waipounamu/South Island from Whakatū/Nelson to Waihōpai/Invercargill, however we teach ākonga wherever they may be throughout the Te Waipounamu/South Island. Many of our main centres also have community classrooms for ākonga to attend. Teachers may also visit ākonga in hospital, at home or take lessons online.

“I go into the Ashburton Health School classroom on every Thursday. I get helped with things that I’m struggling with, without feeling like I’m judged."

Meet Naomi
Southern Health School Student

With support from our teaching team and her medical team, Naomi explored pathways, rebuilt confidence in learning, and created a plan to move forward. By the time she was discharged, Naomi had enrolled in a health course for the following year and felt excited about what comes next.
