Science at the PACT Day Programme, Invercargill

18 March, 2026

We have been looking at the impact of sugary drinks on our teeth, using an egg shell to simulate our teeth.

We then went further and compared the different energy drinks and wondered if sugar free energy drinks were better. Unfortunately this was not the case as it caused much more damage to the teeth and within a shorter time frame.

We have learnt about density by testing different fruits and seeing whether they floated or sank. We learnt that the size of the fruit didn’t matter.

We created our own butter by witnessing and measuring the solid and liquid we produced. We then added different flavours to our butter and made pikelets with our buttermilk.

Yesterday we did the egg drop and discovered which material was the most effective at keeping the egg from breaking. We all got our hypothesis wrong as no one thought the newspaper would be the best at both heights of 1m and 1.5m.
